When the cold weather is approaching or is upon us, those who live in icy and snowy areas will want to take steps to prepare their automatic gate operator for the cold winter weather. Some operators with push/pull tube swing arm gates get a build up of ice and snow, which can trigger an obstruction sensor or even blow fuses.
One method to prepare for this is to extend the tube on the operator arm. Then use a silicone spray lubricant and apply liberally to the push/pull tube. The application of this lubricant will help keep the oil seal well lubricated and enable it to shed the water from the push/pull tube. Additionally, this application will aid the tube itself shed water to decrease the possibility of ice build up.
Another thing to consider in severe cold weather is to install a battery heater. This will help the battery inside the control arm box keep warm. In severe cold weather, the battery can lose some of it’s ability to hold an adequate charge. Keeping the battery at desirable levels will increase peak performance in bad weather.
Another trick to aid the operator arm from freezing up is to wrap the tubes with heater bands, similar to those used to keep cold water pvc pipes from freezing. This will aid in preventing the freeze on the push/pull tube and acme screw.
Use these tips and tricks to keep your gate operator working reliably during the cold winter months.
